Happy International Lolita Day!!!

DSC_0765

Lolita day is the first Saturday of every June. I celebrated a bit early mostly 'cause my cat died and I wanted to wear something really cute to make me feel better. I love Lolita but it's pretty much impossible for me to dress up in the style because it's so freaking expensive, like, one knockoff dress is pretty near the price of one of the main lolita brands and both are in the same price range as a CDG dress so obviously I'll choose the CDG. If you're disapproving of knockoffs, when it comes to Lolita, you pretty much have to STFU because buying designer lolita is neigh impossible unless you have $600 to spend on just one designer cutsew or whatever..... everyone buys brand replica Lolita, the original brands are perpetually sold out and too expensive. This isn't even a brand replica, this is just a vintage uber cute dress I got off ebay 'cause it fit Lolita style. I'm too cheap to afford even the knockoffs. >_>; Shuffles feet. I'm not a true lolita by any means, but it's fun to dabble in it when I'm feeling like I need a picker upper.

If you'd like to learn more about Lolita (no, it's not founded of the Nabakov book), you can learn more at Lolita_handbook. I researched and got into all Japanese Street Fashion at around the same time, I learned about BtSSB the same time I learned about CDG. TBH from what I've noticed, Lolita is dying out in Japan (this is what I hear from friends that live there and visit there) and I see less of it in streetstyle websites, but I'm not that surprised. A lot of awesome famous Japanese stores that sell specific (and pretty much necessary) brands have been gradually closing 'cause they don't have any government support. They're getting pushed out. Still, I heard this maybe a year ago so I do hope the situation got better.

There are different 'types' of Loli: sweet, gothic, guro, oriental, etc. I like wearing Princess because I make it a point to be sickly sweet if I'm going to dress like a doll. Go all the way or go home, you know?

Back 2 dramas now. Bye. ♥

01 December 2009

hey guys yet another post on asians, aren't i varied and interesting in my obsessions

Moping about not getting the scholarship I worked on for a couple months, don't feel like talking much right now (note: not asking for sympathy! do not console me!) and instead will dump some outfits I've been munching on for the past couple days. Don't remember where I got the pictures from -- I go through 30~ Asian Street Style blogs every other day.

bow

hat

comme
head to toe CdG (with a splash of Margiela), obviously I wanted to mug this person for their outfit.

dress
I'm just a sucker for drape and nude and full length skirts. call me predictable?

bag
I'm not a bag person as you all probably know (have I ever done a bag post? there was just this close call with this Lanvin bag I passed up at Sims before I got into fashion and now I have broken up with bags out of humiliation and guilt.) but this is a pretty dope bag.

random post

I've always been super inspired by FRUiTS and Japanese street style, and it's the only inspiration I actively look to for any outfits. I do grab inspiration from all around me, and at the end of the day I can pick out what inspired the outfit, subconciously or not. It's funny. Even though I think Betsy Johnson isn't my thing, two weeks later I'll be wearing something froufrou and be reminded of her unintentionally? Anyway, if you're going to buy any magazine ever, it should be FRUiTS. If you are both 1) stingy and 2) lazy, I've uploaded some of my favorite outfits on my other tumblr. That way, if you miss my outfit posts, you can see BETTER outfits!

Here are some of my favorites, and they pretty much always inspire me. Some aren't from FRUiTS, but never mind that.

this look above is what i wear pretty much on an every day basis.
this look (below) is very number (n)ine... R.I.P bbz.

This is maybe the best outfit ever and if you don't think so you're not my friend.

Nothing in the world is more perfect than this picture. Nothing.

20 December 2008

my life turned upside down and i'd like to take a minute

Man, Fresh Prince was ballin' when I was in middle school. Most of the kids in my class used to just plagiarize episodes of it for Language Arts class, while I wrote about Poe and incest (I was big on the Southern Culture theme in the textbook, also Kaori Yuki's Angel Sanctuary was the first manga I ever read. It is a perfect read if you would like to scar yourself as a 10 yr old for life. I loveloveloveit) and punching mirrors as a geisha. The angst, it burnssssssss.

So anyway, I'm not even on a topic eh? I need none. LOOK AT THE SHOES. That is how you roll with Uggs. I try not to be a snob about clothes, because the truth of the matter is if you style it nicely, even the most blase biece can be worn fabulously. As seen above.

It is a sad day when your granddaddy steals your heels and wears them better than you do. Also, when his beard entices everyone around you to him like white on rice. Mhmhmhm. He is a magical fashion djinni.

03 September 2008

you are my tiny dinosaur

Dear Tokyo Fashion Week,

I fucking LOVE you. You are what made me love fashion. MY ONE TRUE LOVE. And you did not disappoint me.

JUNYA TASHIRO.
I love it love it love it love it love it. Very on point with the gothic, victorian look that's going to be big in the fall... and a long time love. I want it all. It is, however, a bit too reminiscent off CDG's early 2000 FW show...still, I'd buy it all if I had all the money in the world.

Noriko Fukushima. Adore the pastel colors. It's so girlish and...pretty! I love the petal references. It's definitely a feminine collection...something I probably wouldn't wear it it were not for the petal like pleats and wrapping. It'd be cool to experiment with and boy up.

Support Surface. So clean and cerebral. It reminds me of aliens, actually. In a good way, of course. I love the pink dress and the necklaces. It's not entirely my style but the necklaces and the top/vest... yes please.

Aguri Sagimori. Not my favorite. I adore the bookmark jacket, but other then that.... meh. It's too blank for me. And the hair looks like she's hiding crack in her hair.

Kamishima Chinami. I love you I love you I love you.Ruffles? Yes. Shag? Yes. Odd Gareth Pugh black tile-esque things? I'll have several, thank you very much. Texture whores rejoice, for this is the collection for us.

Monotari Ono. See what I mean by the court dress / Victorian vibe of it? A lot of the pieces looked like they had a poor fit but I'm a sucker for ruffles and lace... it reminds me of Vampire Knight (hi weeaboos).

Fur Fur. ........ this would be excellent for camouflage in an overgrown garden or something. I am not a fan of the styling, it covers the clothes. Digging the blazer in the second outfit.

Ne-Net. Ok. No. I think the dress would be cool in an editorial... or just the top half. And the yellow top could potentially be interesting. But I really dislike it overall. D: Sadface.

AND SO MUCH MORE AHHHHHH ILYSM FASHION. You make me happy when skies are grey--or flourescent halogen, as I think of you in AP Physics... p.s OUTFIT POST SOON. I know you all miss my ugly mug.

30 August 2008

definition of:

this is what made me love fashion. A girl with practically no clothes on!

I am constantly drawn to people and labels that are probably hard to understand by some people-- or rather, just understood poorly. Fashion is art to me, as lame as that sounds; I didn't start to like it because I saw a really well dressed person at any point in my life, or because my parents were designers, or because I liked shopping. I saw a culture that lived through clothes and the history behind it.... and I got curious.

I am more interested in the people behind it and their mindset than their clothes. I like what the clothing represents. I like to make up a personality that the person has that explains the clothes. Haute Couture and the upper echelons of fashion in the "material" sense gets to the bottom of that mindset, and makes it into something tangible, exaggerated.

Yes, easy to wear, off the rack clothes can be worn fabulously. But tell me you can pull off Rodarte, or TAO, or Nozomi Ishiguro.....

it's the intensity that I love the most. The personality that is shown through the clothes. Dissecting a story without saying a word. I want to understand the concept of an outfit, the reason someone chooses to wear it over another.

If that's ~shallow~ to like...

man, being deep must suck.

01 August 2008

if you only knew two ways to wear plaid....

here's a hundred more. Now you have no excuse to throw on a plaid shirt, a bandage skirt and call it a day because if these don't inspire you to branch out just a leetttleee then...well... tear.

I'm trying to wean myself off of Fops and Dandies by drowning myself in FRUiTS, but that is just not going to happen. Am I the only one who is saving every outfit post of hers to my computer, or am I just being particularly stalkerish?

Anyway, I think if you want to be an ass and categorize, a formula to epic outfits such as these would go as follows:

Asian Genetics + Plaid + Belly Button Shoes + Wicked Styling + Better Than Everyone Else at Everything Possible = Outfit

Because this isn't too far from the subject, the awesome people at SHIFT.jp emailed me and now I am so stoked (reading gnarlitude religiously = ripping off your word, please don't set your dog on me Jen) for the Pictoplasma NYC exhibit in September. And the 1000 girls snap is also tres awesome. Do check it out. Hey Abigail, we can go to Pictoplasma and pretend we're culturally active! Hell yeah!

05 July 2008

you crave attention you never say "no"

Okay apparently I lied. I had dreams about cameras and shopping so I figure I should come back to you all for a bit.

By means of my lovely Auntie, I am given the opportunity to test out a prototype HD video recorder thingy. I'm not sure how long I'll have it, but it's supposed to be so fly it practically emits rays of glitter and win, so I think it'll be cool to play around with.

I'm getting it later today and methinks I shall make a vlog of my favorite thrift stores and the like for you all. How about it? Anything in particular you'd like to see in the video?

Clip from the movie. Sadly, my Alexa Chung lover is not in it. Sigh.

Over the past few days I've been spending a lot of time with my family during odd hours of the day. My father and I woke up at around 8pm (we take naps a lot) and went to bed at 7am the other day because we watched a bunch of Woody Allen films on TCM. I love What's New Pussycat, so many hot ladies in it. Woody Allen and Peter Sellers are a.maz.ing. It's not their best film but so many awesome people are in it it's forgivable.

I had an epic conversation with Stephanie a few hours ago and she introduced me to a huge list of street sites, and my favorite ones at that.
On that vein, I kinda found the first 50 FRUiTS online so I'm just going to die happy now... I also discovered a sweet online magazine. Check it out.

My favorite person of the week: Coco. Long time coming, but seriously these shoots are amazing no?

THIS spread with Irina is also fantastic. Blogger seems to hate it because I can't upload pics of it. o_o

Click on the pictures for the spreads, natch.

Also, LOL AT LV V.S EBAY. Seriously I laughed so hard when I read it. I wonder what the effect on ebay users will be? Hmm.

I'm planning a trip and I have a choice between Baltimore, Boston, Philly, Washington D.C, Philly, and Toronto. Which has the best thrifting/vintage, you think? Let me know your opinions plz, and possibly places to shop in said place!

6 Unimportant Things About Me

  1. Link back to the person that tagged you.
  2. Post these rules on your blog.
  3. Share six unimportant things about yourself.
  4. Tag six people at the end of your entry.
  1. My best time for 50 free is 27.10 seconds if I remember correctly. I haven't beaten it *officially* and that was set when I was 12. God it's depressing to realize I peaked when I was 12. I think now I get to like... 29.34 seconds if I try. Blah.
  2. I keep dinosaurs in my window, between the screen and the actual window. I like to tan them.
  3. I have a summer habit of falling asleep in trees. I have this one tree in the park that has a little canopy of branches about 25 feet up and it's so easy to sleep/read in.
  4. My favorite ice cream is a mix of mint chocolate chip and rocky road.
  5. Last night I stayed up until 3 AM reading Harry Potter fanfiction.
  6. I have a turquoise, teal and sea green shag carpet I sleep on instead of the bed right next to it.
I tag anyone who gives a crap. I know, I'm so enthusiastic.

Anyway, I'm off to dance around in my wannabe CDG way back 2001 outfit complete with white makeup. Cheers.

27 June 2008

and then damnit the falafel exploded

Hi guys! A few emailed and commented on how I studded my new shoes, and it's really quite simple! I followed Flying Saucer's DIY but used Gorilla Glue. I used very little, because the glue tends to foam--use wisely! Better to put on less than have to wipe away later on. The shoes are manmade, cheapo material so the glue works fine.

Since summer is here I have more time on my hands (until July 5th, whatever) but there's a sale going on for these shoes and I have studs left over so if anyone would like, I can do it for you! Just drop me an email at letsbeninjas@gmail.com I'll let you know. I'm looking for some already studded shoes as well.

Anyway:

I hung out with Maddy today! (We never made up codenames, gah!) Along with my friend Peter, we limped I mean frolicked in the nonexistent City breeze, ate falafel, and shopped. I have also come to the realization I should never be in charge of directions, because I am semi-retarded at all things important.

Anyway, we walked around East Village and St. Marks and I showed her around my usual haunts, discovered new places. You'll see the pictures of that soon enough. Until then, here are my finds. Again, camerea phone pictures, blah. I think I'm getting the hang of it, my little dit above is pretty fly, no?

I love love love my buys lately, in part because 1) Most of them were gifts and 2) Not one of them was over $10. Am I pro? I am very pro. You could almost consider me awesome. Oh wait, I already am. Teehee.

And omfg (yes i went there) how cute is Tavi with her new haircut? Seriously, total girl fawn/crush/squeal. Best cut ever I do believe.

"Oh I see you thar, envi'n mah do. *preen eyelash bat preen preen*" It's okay to look in the mirror very time you pass by one, it's a total epic haircut. Squish!

Speaking of epic, I dreamed about TAO Comme des Garcons F/W Paris last night. My favorite so far, and I've gone through three pages of collections so far.

After seeing the collection I've been on the hunt for lots and lots of textures and ruffles and general disorder to add to my wardrobe. I enjoy my style as of now but I really think there's some experimentation to be had! Maddy and I were considering buying petticoats/tutu's, and I WILL get one by the end of the upcoming month, mark my words.

I have celebrating to do tommorow (congrats my senior bitches, you're freshman again and have entered the school with the highest amount of STD'S IN THE COUNTRY! HAVE PRIDE!)

Cheers.

abigail owes me 7 dollars and i think she has tourettes

HIIIII GUYS. My exams are over and school is unofficially over! I only skipped twice! Be proud. Guitar hero and skating down the hallways, oh yeah. I would like to take the time to give my thanks to my study buddy. Consistent, warm, kind, furry...

In other news.... my favorite black silk windbreaker has a tear in it! It's not huge but substantial enough I don't want to wear it anymore if the hole gets any biggger....and oh, you've never seen it. I'll take a picture before it goes into the abyss of my closet again.

I've been wearing all black lately, kind of like Stephanie. Most definitely because of the Queens brainwashing me into wanting their lives, but not biggie. I also have my favorite fash book to do the inspiring. Example:

Minion gave me this book early in the year, it was a pre-release copy her dad brought home from work. Style Deficit Disorder, it's all about Japanese style. I'm thinking you should buy it and ogle with me. Yes? Yes? Yes.

Not Japanese Street Style, but each and every one of them holds their own. I just spent 2 hours on Lookbook.nu....

  1. Despite the blatant Crystal Castles (a.k.a Doucheband extraordinaire) I totally want to beat her up and run away with her outfit. I'm afraid she'd beat me up first though. Click.
  2. I LOVE THE CUDDLE POTENTIONAL. The guy's nice too. Click..
  3. The reason I chose this was because he is the identical twin of this guy in one of my old swim teams. His eyes hurt my feelings. I'm pretty sure he's the only reason why I tolerated that team. Pretty, pretty eyes..
  4. ......I need it. Click.
This is actually a pretty good way to grasp my own style... I've worn my own versions of these outfits once or twice. I want another granny sweater now....
