bringing the drama

I know we're well past NYFW (my favorite day of fashion month already passed in Paris, too) but I thought it was important to showcase the work of Michael Doyle, from the Art Institute Show from NYFW this season. I wasn't feeling up to going so I asked Tayler to scope it out for me and I regret not going now if only for Doyle's work. It's very dramatic and beautiful and reminded me of my favorite illustrations for my favorite lady, Salome -- the Oscar Wilde retelling of the story. I've written about how much I love her for Rookie already

When I looked more into Doyle's inspiration, I wasn't even surprised. Verbatim:

My collection "Of a Neophyte" is inspired by the Art Nouveau artist Aubrey Beardsley. He was an early 20th Century artist from the UK who made grotesque and sexually charged paintings inspired by (or mocking) his aristocratic upbringing. My collection is inspired by costume and history, yet my personal level of creation and innovation makes the clothes very special and of a time not seen before. I stay as conceptual as possible and create clothing that is not a carbon copy of my inspiration.

Aubrey Beardsley was the illustrator for my favorite version of Salome. I remember flipping through Wilde's play in middle school and staring at how lethal and beautiful the illustrations were. I've always gravitated towards the gothic, I guess. Gothic women actually had FEELINGS, so know? Feelings like RAGE and bitterness and things I was feeling as a bullied marginalized girl in middle school who was questioning her sexuality and getting real tired of people calling me Chinese Chicken or Jackie Chan's little sister and then asking me to do their homework for them. Gothic women killed their men and looked fabulous doing it. I've always admired that. I still do, haha.

I think Doyle's interpretations are really beautiful and I wanted to share them because he's been overlooked a little, I think. Ok, I'm back to doing homework.  I'll talk to you soon -- I have so much to share!!! Much love.

Eckhaus Latta SS2013

Little obsessed with the models in the back.

THEY ARE. SO. CUTE.

Really into the Echaus Latta presentation too, it was more of a performance piece than models staring into space, though I couldn't capture that aspect. I wanna see this stuff up close at a showroom and see it better -- last season Eckhaus Latta used plastic to make this kind of shearling coat I saw at Opening Ceremony and it was really cool, I bet they did the same thing, or something similar, with some of these seemingly simplistic garments.

Kimberly Ovitz SS2013

My fashion week this season is really low key -- more concerned with seeing friends and Rookie things* than I am with anything else. But the shows that I have been attending have been wonderful and I am happy to share my experience with you as much as I can. The first show I went to was Kimberly Ovitz -- I love her #lesbianchic (was that snarky cc: style.com? I'm mostly amused) situation, there were some looks I'd love to wear head to toe. It reminded me a lot of my friend Kristin actually, very sexy cool. I am just so INSPIRING with my fashion reviews, hmmm? Regardless of my ineptitude at describing the show verbally, here are some photos. It felt like a really sacred show, minimal music, barefoot, slow walking models. It felt just really fucking cool.

As always, click the photos for better viewing experience

^ This was my favorite look AND my favorite model.

I've seen that rope knitwear idea in every show and presentation I've seen thus far. Trendspotting.

Anyway, now I'm going to go to bed early and snuggle with my new Rookie Yearbook! Speaking of which, I'm going to be reading @ the Rookie Yearbook celebration Sunday, if you're in NYC you should come. The deets are on Rookie and the Rookie tumblr. ♥

proenza and cotton candy and jesus imitations

So this is what I wore the last day I went to shows during Fashion Week, and to Tavi's Cadaver Screening/Party.  Recognize that print? YES YOU DO. Or you should, it's from Proenza Schouler's best collection. (We're not going to mention this season ok? I was gagging when I saw the pictures.)

Rent the Runway & Krupp Group were gracious enough to offer to dress me for the night, and I used the credit they offered me to rent one of their dresses instead to buy this on sale. It's actually a drop waist dress but I know my body shape and decided to belt it into something more fitting my petite stature and I love it so much. The texture is remarkable. I think I'll get it tailored to the shape I want eventually but belting it is easy enough  (read: doesn't cost me a penny).

Since this post is also going to include me rubbing a shoe orgasmically and pictures where I look high as fuck (I was high... ON LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!) I will be putting the rest of the pictures after a cut. They're worth the click, I promise.

rachel antonoff, cute cats, and horcruxes

Low key day today -- brunch with Lucrecia, then chill time with Kristin (all lesbian gossip, all the time) & a quick visit into Rafael Cennamo's presentation which was lovely and I wish I had beauty pictures of it for future reference. Here is an instagram of it, though. So pretty! Might drop by for a showroom appointment to spend more time admiring the details.

Then we met up with Tavi and caught up and headed down to Rachel Antonoff, where it was like EVERYONE I LOVE IN ONE PLACE!! So many friends I'm not gonna spend 304924 minutes naming them. But it was so, so great and the music was great -- the Drive soundtrack -- and there was a CAT and also ADORABLE CHILDREN and A REALLY CUTE CAT and all the clothes reminded me of my favorite lady and it was just so lovely I don't even mind that my feet still hurt like hell. It was such a cute collection -- when does Antonoff ever disappoint? I was ogling the creepers and the sweatshirt in particular. Love.

It's days like these that make me happy to be doing that I'm doing. Some Rookie readers and also blog readers said hi at the tents (HIIIIII sorry I couldn't stay longer but it was such a pleasure to meet you all!!♥) too and it just made me feel validated to be among people I care about and have known for a long time and surrounded by clothes that have so much care and thought put into them. Going to sleep with a smile on my face knowing I get to do this tomorrow, too. :')
