definition of:

this is what made me love fashion. A girl with practically no clothes on!

I am constantly drawn to people and labels that are probably hard to understand by some people-- or rather, just understood poorly. Fashion is art to me, as lame as that sounds; I didn't start to like it because I saw a really well dressed person at any point in my life, or because my parents were designers, or because I liked shopping. I saw a culture that lived through clothes and the history behind it.... and I got curious.

I am more interested in the people behind it and their mindset than their clothes. I like what the clothing represents. I like to make up a personality that the person has that explains the clothes. Haute Couture and the upper echelons of fashion in the "material" sense gets to the bottom of that mindset, and makes it into something tangible, exaggerated.

Yes, easy to wear, off the rack clothes can be worn fabulously. But tell me you can pull off Rodarte, or TAO, or Nozomi Ishiguro.....

it's the intensity that I love the most. The personality that is shown through the clothes. Dissecting a story without saying a word. I want to understand the concept of an outfit, the reason someone chooses to wear it over another.

If that's ~shallow~ to like...

man, being deep must suck.

Holy shit you put our argument into words! Haha. Is she convinced yet?

i think that's really fascinating :)

i definitely agree that fashion is an art form.

i think that the reason that the fashion industry itself seems so sinister to many people is because it, in a way, controls and manipulates this, let's call it, "expression of self."

so i guess what i'm saying is, essentially, i'm dig what fashion means, can mean, can convey.... but not so much the industry.

>< sorry if thats a bit noxious

susie: i tried on one skirt from TAO the other day, it was amazing and so odd. francisco scognamiglio = awesome. of course i will, can't let you have all the fun with the amazing designers!

stephanie: she doesn't even care, but i told her about a 50% vintage sale and she's SO THERE. IRONIC.

nasreen: i'm glad you've started commenting! i missed your emails. definitely agree with your points on what fashion industry seems to be.

Fashion is an art, that is certain! <3

I can always appreciate a purist. And I love the photo you used. Sums up the argument pretty well.

I've never commented on your blog or anything but have been reading it for a little while (hope that doesn't sound too creepy). Anyway, I think you're such an extremely creative and hilarious person :) Your taste in fashion is super unique and it's mind blowing how freakin' young you are, geez. I love how you said that you weren't into fashion just because your parents were designers or whatever.
Ps. I wish I had half the guts you do!! You really don't care what people think...

Arabelle said...

charlyn: aw, thank you! you have fantastic style yourself. yeah, i guess i am kind of like "screw the world" when it comes down to it.. when you think about it, you can't make everyone happy and there isn't enough time in the world to even try!

so you just have to kind of keep calm and carry on. and if i cared about anonymous idiots... well, let's say i'm a vengeful bitch and it gives me incentive to keep on doing what I'm doing?

haha. :)

foxyroxy48236 said...

Wow like charlyn I really envy your individuality. I just started blogging because I was scared to think what would happen If someone from my school found it but now that all seems so trivial.

so again, thank you for your no-apologies outlook on life and fashion. your bad-ass!!

I love your last statement. So true! Nice post.

yeah, I know! You're so right about dismissing everyone else's negative opinions... I don't think I'm the most confident person but I've come a long way and a lot of it is thanks to young inspirations like yourself! :) I just don't like drawing so much attention to myself when everyone is so "normally" dressed (and freakin' booooooringggg) but I've learned (a bit) to be like screw you. You've helped! thank you!

and about what "foxyroxy48236" said: I was also afraid of others' perceptions of my blog (because at school and stuff I'm a pretty shy, quiet girl) but again, Arabelle, with your gutsiness as my inspiration... I don't let it get to me :)

you take interest in an "deep" part of fashion, artsy artsy your so cool etc etc

what the hell is wrong with being shallow?

I was drawn to fashion as art as well. Japanese street style drew me in, not because the crazy looks, but because their idea of recreating haute couture--of making every aspect of their look a form of expression and originality. My friends still don't get it, they think I dress "nice" and those people dress "crazy," but the truth is I respect those styles so much more...

Clara said...

Your post has got me thinking, and I'm definitely going to take what you said in account when I'm trying to define my personal style these days.

Farren said...

i think fashion will always have the stigma of being shallow to those who aren't really into it. that's why i kind of don't like answering the 'what do you like' question. when i say fashion people kind of roll their eyes. =/ and i'm not even sure i'm on topic here. it's 1 in the morning.

Arabelle said...

superawesomeman: oh, i don't know..... it holds you back though. looking at the clothes is fun but it's more rewarding for me to get to know what goes into them, yeah?

you can like clothes ust 'cause their clothes because there is always going to be something new when you get bored of that, but that won't keep you going forever.

it's thinking that fashion is shalllow that kind of gives it such a lame label.

everyone else: I'm SO glad you told me your feelings on the subject, it really makes my day. :)

choubelle said...

That is such a beautifully written summary of why fashion is important to you. Ffashion goes waaaay beyond aesthetics and us bloggers are trying to represent that!!

hey congrats on all of your press as of late! Well deserved! ;)

i totally agree with you. it's not just about what they're wearing, it's about why they're wearing it. it interests me alot, esp with like random people on the street.
i love your blog, btways.

i definitely agree that fashion is an art form. i'm so fascinated by it. i love to find out why someone put certain pieces together. and i mostly love when someone is fabulous enough to pull of something crazy.

Thanks for this post, I wish that more people could read it and understand
I think what really pisses "intellectuals" off about fashion is the Aberzombies and people who just wear what vogue tells them to, but don't put any of themselves into fashion
and people don't understand that no matter what they, their clothing and style still communicate a message

More than art, its completely tangible making it individually personal. A possible form of translation from the designer to the person wearing it to the person looking at it?

Your words are beautiful!

finally, someone who understands and feels the same way i do about this industry! i tell people, "I want to work in fashion" and they get this funny look on their face and say, "really?". they think i'm just another teenage girl who "omgz luvs shopping"

but it's true. fashion is an art form. or, better yet, dressing creatively is an art form. thank you for this post!!!

Oh right, this is why I married you.

i completely agree with all of this -- its not about making an outfit look cool so people think you look good, its about the concept and the art of it.
i was wondering if you could check out my blog, see if you like it that would be really fucking cool. my name's india. and holy shit i love your blog

um-you don't know me but just so you know, I officially love you

The same reason I read fashion blogs: for the personality shining through. It's a glimpse of life, that's why it's beautiful. I prefer the intimacy of day-to-day fashion than runway collections. I love you blog and I've been reading it for a while. I love it! :)

thank you so much!
you ve explained what fashion means for me.
although i take in fashion as an artform and am always curious what the desingers motivations to create certain outfits, i am one of those who are poor at analysing naked pictures.

and also a thousand claps for your individuality and creativity!
